Rosemary Lancaster had a seventeen year career in French Studies at the University of Western Australia, where she is currently a Research Fellow. Her research areas include French poetry and art of the 19th and 20th centuries, women's writings and women's travel literature. She is presently a board member of the internationally refereed journal Essays in French Literature and Culture (EFL@C).

She is currently writing a book on the relationship of the 20th century poet René Char with the art of the past and of his time.

Career outline (teaching)

  • 1965-70: High school teacher, Western Australia
  • 1985-2003: Teaching posts, tutor then lecturer, UWA
  • 1994-2001: Designer, coordinator, and teacher under contract to the Education Department of Western Australia, retraining French primary and secondary school teachers at UWA and leading immersion courses in France
  • 1999: Promotion to Senior Lecturer
  • 1999-2001: Convenor, French Studies, European Languages and Studies, UWA
  • 2003-present: Honorary Research Fellow, UWA


Career Highlights

  • 1971: Winner, Open Poetry, Sir Thomas Wardle Literary Prize
  • 1974: Commonwealth Postgraduate Research Award
  • 1988: First Prize: UWA Extension, Le Français sans mystère (course designed for updating teaching skills for secondary and tertiary French language teachers)
  • 1990-1991: 75th Anniversary Re-entry Post-doctoral Research Fellowship
  • 1994: Commendation for Achievement in Teaching, Excellence in Teaching Award, Faculty of Arts
  • 1995: Certificate of Commendation, Excellence in Innovative Teaching Award, UWA
  • 1996: Winner, Excellence in Innovation in Teaching Award, UWA
  • 1996: Winner, UWA Faculty of Arts Excellence in Teaching Award
  • 2005: Chevalier de l'ordre des Palmes académiques

Two books, one on the poet René Char and one on Australian women in France:

  • 2008: Je Suis Australienne: Remarkable Women in France, 1880-1945, University of Western Australia Press, Perth. Available from major book sellers.
  • 1994: La Poésie éclatée de René Char, Rodopi, Amsterdam.


Numerous articles spanning twenty years on poetry, French women writers and pedagogy (notably on in-country immersion teaching, René Char and Annie Ernaux).
