  • 1973 BPhil, St Andrews, for a thesis entitled "Style in L'Étranger by Albert Camus" (computer-assisted stylistics)

  • 1984 PhD, Edinburgh, for a thesis entitled "La poésie résistante: Lexis, semantics and syntax in the war poetry of Paul Éluard" (computer-assisted stylistics)

  • 1965-67 Senior Tutor in French, University of Western Australia

  • 1968-99 Lecturer then Senior Lecturer (1991) in French, University of Dundee

  • 1973-99 Founding member of Scottish Universities French Language Project (later Scottish Applied French Language Association)

  • 1988-99 Director, Centre for Applied Language Studies, University of Dundee

  • 1990 Decorated by the French Government for services to the French
    language and to Franco-British relations: Officier dans l'Ordre des Palmes académiques

  • 1991 Association of Commonwealth Universities Senior Travelling Fellowship to Australia, 1991-1992

Research Interests

My research has been in contemporary French language, discourse analysis, second language acquisition, communicative language teaching and learning and the history and defence of French.

Currently I am working on the influence of English on four of the major languages of Europe: French, German, Italian and Spanish.
